  1. … this photo speaks volumes! It makes me think of the suffering the native Americans had to endure – cultural unrooting, theft of their land, disease, genocide, loss of loved ones …I find a lot of that in the expression of this man.

    Thank you, Thomas. Yes, there’s a lot of cultural as well as personal history etched in this gentleman’s face. And he was a gentleman! I spent a couple of hours in Union Square talking with him and photographing him, and he introduced me to many of his friends. He may have been down on his luck, but I think his dignity clearly shows through.
